In 1855, The Southwestern Publishing House was founded in Nashville, TN and is the oldest privately owned company in the city. The primary products at that time were books and Bibles that were sold through mail order. After the Civil War ended, The Southwestern Company began selling books door to door, making it the oldest direct-selling company in the US.

Southwestern began expanding in 1975 and has since spawned over a dozen different companies in diverse industries including financial services, insurance, fundraising, consulting, executive search and personal coaching. Book publishing is still an integral part of the company and the Southwestern Publishing Group has over 50 years of creating successful connections between organizations and individuals through custom books and cookbooks.
Favorite Recipes Press, the custom cookbook division, was founded in 1961 by Millard Fuller and Morris Dees, who after selling their company to Southwestern went on to found Habitat for Humanity and the Southern Poverty Law Center, respectively. Since that time, Favorite Recipes Press has become one of the nation’s best-known and respected producers of custom cookbooks, with over 1500 titles to its credit. With a full array of services including editing, design, production, marketing, storage, fulfillment, and distribution, the creation of an award-winning cookbook has never been easier.
In 2008 Beckon Books a new imprint and custom publishing division was launched. Beckon Books specializes in book publishing for large national and international corporations as well as cultural attractions such as Zoos, Aquariums, Museums, and other businesses.
In 2011 FRP acquired the Historic Hospitality imprint which produces custom books for America’s iconic hotels, resorts, inns, spas, and historic destinations. These beautiful books showcase all aspects of the property to groups, weddings, VIP’s and other corporate functions as well as a keepsake for guests.
